VETERANS COMMITTEE NEWS
GREETINGS EVERYONE FROM YOUR WOODSON TERRACE VETERANS COMMITTEE!
The Veterans Committee continues to keep quite busy ... we all have an “agenda” of activities/organizations, etc. we’re involved in & with ... we immensely enjoy what we do & in this article I will try to enlighten you on what’s transpired since last newsletter ...
The Veterans Committee did not meet in SEPTEMBER or JANUARY & OCTOBER through FEBRUARY are recapped below ...
OCTOBER’s Meeting was @ the Missouri Veterans Home on Lewis & Clark Blvd. This was the Committee’s 3rd annual barbeque for the 300+ Veterans who reside there. The Committee, as in the past, purchased & barbequed hamburgers & brats for the Veterans along with having a variety of chips & home baked cookies. We’re scheduled for our 4th barbeque on October 3rd, 2017. It’s always a fun & reward-able time with the Veterans for us. Mayor Besmer & Committee Member Rick Rutledge again oversaw the cooking with all of us “pitching in” as well. Bob Doty also came to flip burgers & brats. Several off duty WT Police Officers stopped by to offer their assistance & have lunch too. Beautiful weather & lots of fun! And of course, we got to hear “archery stories” from Mayor Besmer & Rick as they sweated over the coals! I know I speak for everyone on the Committee when I say that as we walk out the doors that day, we take with us the gratification & delight brought to us by these men & women. Their “stories” are phenomenal! BINGO was the Veterans afternoon activity & Caroline stayed to participate ... Caroline is a volunteer @ the Missouri Veterans Home & is quite frequently on campus for a variety of activities with the Veterans.
NOVEMBER’s Meeting was @ the Robert J. Madden Veterans Monument in the park ... it was our 2nd of 2 Flag Retirement Ceremonies for 2016. Beginning with year 2017, the Committee will only have 1 Flag Retirement Ceremony a year & that will be the 1st Tuesday in November (November 7th, 2017). The Committee will accept & “retire” flags only from Woodson Terrace residents & to do so, residents should contact City Hall (314/427-2600) & leave a message for a Committee Member to call & arrange for pick up, or residents can drop flag(s) off @ City Hall ... remember ... just flags from WT residents!
On NOVEMBER 5th (Saturday prior to Veterans Day) was the Veterans Day Ceremony. Sheryl Gerrein led in song & American Legion Post #143’s Honor Guard “Posted & Retired Colors”, along with the “Gun Salute” & “TAPS”. Their continued participation & time committed is most appreciated along with that of Military Service Representatives Rich Lefebvre (Marines) & Ray Valli (Army).
DECEMBER was a Committee Meeting with Caroline updating us of the Toys for Tots Collection she oversees for the Committee & we brainstormed the 2017 Trivia Night Fund Raiser in March @ the new Community Center ... the Committee will be the 1st event there.
FEBRUARY’s meeting consisted of the final preparations for the Committee’s 5th annual Trivia Night Fund Raiser along with discussing tentative plans for M.O.C.H.I.P. (Missouri Child Identification Program) in August. Caroline is arranging this with the Missouri Masonic Children’s Foundation. More on this forthcoming & I’ll arrange to have the date, time, & location put on the marquee as well as the web site; in addition to flyers ... this is not just a WT program ... the Committee will be “reaching out” to local schools & communities.
The Committee will meet on MARCH 7th & on MARCH 18th is the Committee’s 5th annual Trivia Night Fund Raiser @ 7:00 PM @ the new Community Center ... information flyers are @ City Hall or you can call City Hall (314/427-2600) & leave a message for myself or another Committee Member to return your call or Email me (email@example.com). Please don’t forget to leave a contact phone number. The Woodson Terrace Veterans Committee is self-funded & relies on the annual Trivia Fund Raiser to support events such as the annual barbeque @ the Missouri Veterans Home; monetary donations such as the annual Missouri Veterans Home “adopt a veteran” program @ Christmas of which the Committee adopts several Veterans, donations to various military related programs and/or organizations, etc.
Further in 2017 ... MAY 29th (Monday) is the Memorial Day Ceremony & NOVEMBER 11th (Saturday) is the Veterans Day Ceremony. The Memorial Day Ceremony includes The Bell Ceremony. Each begin @ 9:30 AM & take place @ the Robert J. Madden Veterans Monument located in the parameters of John L. Brown Park (corner of Stansberry & Calvert Avenues in Woodson Terrace) & will include Sheryl Gerrein leading in song & American Legion Post #143’s Honor Guard will “Post & Retire Colors”, conduct the “Gun Salute” & “TAPS”.
In closing, a reminder ... the Veterans Committee meets @ Woodson Terrace City Hall the 1st Tuesday of the month @ 7:00 PM. We welcome visitors; however if you plan to attend please check the bulletin board outside of WT City Hall as there are times military related projects, programs, organizations, etc. conflict with the 1st Tuesday of the month.
Woodson Terrace residents can be quite proud of this Committee; its members are devoted & supportive of not just WT Veterans but all Veterans & realize the many sacrifices he/she made for the freedom we have. On behalf of everyone on the Woodson Terrace Veterans Committee, we appreciate the many kind words of gratitude we receive from you. We do keep busy with the affiliations, programs, organizations, etc. each member is involved in & with. Please feel free to contact me via Email @ firstname.lastname@example.org or call City Hall (314-427-2600) & leave a message for me to call you. Please don’t forget to leave a contact phone number.
